who we are.
hi, i'm mr burley, but you can call me charlie...
I'm a husband, teacher of almost 10 years, tutor and published author.
I started Next Chapter Tutoring for one simple reason: I love literacy!
I love teaching it, I love talking about it and I love practising it.
As a child myself, I'd spend hours writing in my bedroom. English was always my favourite subject at school, and the one thing I felt I was good at.
As a teacher, it became my favourite subject to teach, too - especially creative writing. I believe literacy has the ability to open doors for our children: from the skills of communicating to empathy and understanding.
For me, literacy is the subject skill that ties everything else together and equips our young people with the skills they'll need to be successful in life!
what we do.
english tutoring for 7-11 year olds in colchester.
Engaging, enjoyable lessons that don't only support your child in making accelerated progress, but actually instill a love of literacy too. From reading fluency to comprehension skills; grammar, spelling and punctuation to creative writing, we cover all areas of the Key Stage Two English curriculum - all hosted in an exciting space.
small group and 1:1 sessions.
Every child is individual: some prefer learning with peers, other prefer direct instruction. Whatever your child's preference, we ensure that their needs are at the centre of our approach. Our small groups are limited at 4 children per group.

SATs prep.
I know the stress, pressure and overwhelm the SATs can cause for our young people; I'm passionate in helping them not only achieve everything they're capable of, but supporting their mental and emotional health through the process. We cover both the English Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling and Reading papers.
a targeted approach.
Through informal assessment, we ensure we know exactly the areas your child needs support with and deliver specific, intentional interventions to get them feeling confident with the curriculum.

our space is your space.
We have designed our learning space around one core principle: comfort. From our cosy corner to soft style chairs, we want our learners to look forward to being in our space.
When you visit, you may also notice our room doesn't look like an ordinary classroom: there's no overcrowded display boards, no bright colours and we *never* turn on the large fluorescent lights.
This isn't by accident. We've designed our space around the latest academic research, not only on cognition and learning, but wellbeing (Mr B's other favourite subject) too.
There's cold drinks in summer and the option of warm drinks in winter. We have a snack bar our learners are welcome to use at no additional cost.
And let's not forget you, their adults. There's parking, bathrooms, a comfortable lobby space, and you're more than welcome to a cup of tea or coffee whilst you wait.
our mission.
make learning literacy fun.
As a teacher of 9 years and published author, I know that reading and writing can sometimes be... unexciting, to put it politely. We believe that learning through the lens of personal interests, hobbies and passions is what makes things really stick - it's learning, but on their terms. Here, it's not just about making academic progress, it's about enjoying the process too - and building a lifelong passion for learning!
help children let go of their limits.
Your child's school likely talk often about "Growth Mindset", but how many of our young people really develop one? Each of the personal highlights of my teaching career have come from helping children let go of the limits they, or others, have placed on them; helping children see, believe and reach their true potential. That's the magic!
equip them with life skills, for life.
Resilience, empathy, emotional regulation. These are all tools that even most adults haven't quite mastered!
It doesn't matter that they're learning about inference, compound sentences or expanded noun phrases for descriptive effect; tutoring is an opportunity for your child to further develop the skills that will help them live their most successful life.
